Sichuan opera

As a unique element of Sichuan’s culture, the Sichuan opera dates from the Qianlong period (1736-1796) of the Qing Dynasty (1616-1911). The Legend of the White Snake and Jinshan Temple, a well-known piece of Sichuan opera, is popular with audiences both at home and abroad.

Face-changing is unique to Sichuan opera. It is a romantic way of expressing the feelings and emotions of the characters in a play. There are three main ways of “changing faces”--swiping, puffing and tearing. However, there is a fourth special way: qi gong (breathing technique)
