This was the house where Du Fu, a great Tang Dynasty poet, lived when he traveled to Chengdu. It’s the largest, best-preserved and best-known residence of Du Fu and it is quite unique. It covers an area of 16 hectares, with the buildings in typical Qing-style architecture and the grounds an unusual mix of traditional Chinese gardens. It is both a temple dedicated to the poet and a residence museum celebrating his literary achievements.
In the winter of 759 AD, Du Fu took his family from Gansu to Sichuan to refuge from An-Shi Disturbances, and built a thatched cottage, the famous "Chengdu Thatched Cottage". In 1985, Du Fu Thatched Cottage was renamed as Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum where there are more than 30,000 volumes of historical materials and more than 2,000 precious cultural relics. The existing Du Fu Thatched Cottage is combined by Plum Garden and Caotang Temple.

Famous Attractions

Epic Hall

It is the central architecture of memorial ancestral temples in Du Fu Thatched Cottage. There is an statue of Du Fu sculptured by Liu Kaiqu, a famous sculpture at the center of the Epic Hall and there is displayed with couplets and tablets inscribed by celebrities of past dynasties in the Hall.

Gongbu Ancestral Temple

There is consecrated with Du Fu''s, Lu You, Huang Tingjian, famous poets of China; Gongbu Ancestral Temple is also named as Three Saint Temple. There is 1 room with 3 high and shining pillars, high stone steps, lattice windows and door, all of which show a solemn and serious atmosphere.

Tablet Pavilion of Shaoling Thatched Cottage

Tablet Pavilion of Shaoling Thatched Cottage, located at the eastern side of Gongbu Ancestral Temple, represents Du Fu Thatched Cottage and has become the symbolic scenery spot of Du Fu Thatched Cottage and famous landscape in Chengdu.

Tang-Dynasty Relics Exhibition Hall

It is located at the north of Du Fu Thatched Cottage. At the end of 2001, many life relics and cultural relics of the Tang Dynasty were found in Du Fu Thatched Cottage, which greatly enriches historic and cultural connotation of Du Fu Thatched Cottage, verifies the Du Fu''s description for living conditions and life situation and clarifies debate about location of thatched cottage in ancient and modern times and deepen profound historical color of Du Fu Thatched Cottage.

Caotang Temple

Caotang Temple, located at the east of Du Fu Thatched Cottage, is an ancient temple built in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Caotang Temple, Wenshu Monastery, Zhaojue Temple and Baoguang Temple are called as "Four Buddhist Temples". Today''s Caotang Temple (Fan''an Temple) was built in the Qing Dynasty and the whole architectural complex is still well preserved, with a gate to the temple (today''s South Gate). Tianwang Palace, Daxiong Palace, Ordination Hall and Buddhist Scripture Depository are set in Caotang Temple.
