Chinese Green: Regimen Granted By Heaven
In the construction industry, Basic Green is a green granite originated in China. It enjoys a world fame together with Brazil yellow and Thailand gold. In our everyday life, basic green is a wish for being healthy, harmony, safety and joy, it’s also a constant auspicious luck.
Bamboo, a kind of green plant, represents great auspiciousness.
Zhuangzi believes that Phoenix only inhabits on bamboos, only eat the fruit of bamboos and only drink sweet springs with mild wine scent. The story that the great King of Pre-Qin Fujian cut bamboos to welcome Phoenix still sparkles in the history.
Where there are bamboos, there are Phoenixes. Phoenixes arrive, good luck arrives. Perhaps some phoenixes are attracted by the beauty of southern Shu Zhuhai, and pass on the care from god.
The auspicious providence of “green”
According to southern Chinese traditional geomantic point of view, living beside bamboos is one of the symbols of good luck. On the way of reclaiming the wasteland, ancestors planted bamboos when came across the forest and built bridges when running into waters. As the most faithful company of migrants, bamboo take roots into the vast land of southern China.
Therefore, the village in the clouds is just a romantic imagination of poets, while the village in the bamboos is the most poetic habitat of human beings. Originated from a historical record by Duan Chengyuan, bamboo begins to become a signal for safety to home. Living in a house surrounded by bamboos, ancient people achieved the ideal life depicted in Lin Quan Ya Zhi by Gaoxi in Song Dynasty that home should be a place not only for living, but also for walking, appreciating and visiting.
Bamboos deeply penetrate into our lives, so not a single period in history is unrelated to bamboos. Historical records show that more than 7000 years ago, people began to apply bamboo in everyday life. In the cultural period of Yangshao, about 5000 years ago, the character of “bamboo” emerged and is used till now. The character of “bamboo” is composed of two same individual characters, representing unity within people. It’s a favorable character in love. So, in the wedding custom of southern china, bamboo is a necessary element to send the best wishes to the new couple.
The character of bamboo “zhu” gradually evaluates to a surname in China. In Shang Dynasty, two princes of the bamboo country both strayed out of the country because they wanted to leave the crown to each other. Later when they were in the service of Emperor Zhou, they inhibited Zhou attacking Shang country and they were hungry to death because they didn’t want to betray their country. Posterity used the name of their country to name people, showing great respects to their virtue.
In every dynasty of China, bamboo is the main melody. When it comes to Qin dynasty, the “symbol” for giving the order is made of bamboo, which means that subjects should be polite and obedient like bamboos; from Jin Dynasty on, the faithfulness of bamboo became the theme of officers. In Tang Dynasty, the fashion of painting bamboo began. In Song and Ming Dynasty, men of literature praised the lofty of bamboos. In Man and Qing Dynasty, finally, there came a representative for bamboo, a master in painting bamboos, Zheng Banqiao. A new fatigue of bamboo swept the country again.
Embodied millennium of Chinese bamboo culture, southern shu Zhuhai is not only a natural wonder but also a humanistic home gathering the auspicious providence. Visitors come to Zhuhai and back home with the best wishes of prosperity and safety.
Experienced people could tell the exact position of the underground winter bamboo shoots by the color and growing direction of the leaves. In the valleys of Zhuhai, under the breeze and sun of spring, moso bamboo shoot could grow to over 20m tall for 40 days, at a speed of 1m a night as the fastest. This is a race of speed, who can grow to the tallest in the shortest time, who is qualified to enjoy enough sunshine.
The height and diameter of bamboo become steady in a very short time after it comes out of the ground, and it just grows stronger afterward. The force of growth comes from the huge root beneath the ground which connects all bamboos. According to botanists, a bamboo forest is actually one plant. Adult bamboo shoots take the responsibility of breeding posterity. They give the nutrition getting from the sun to new-born bamboo shoots through the root. These energies provide sufficient force for the growth of bamboos.
Besides that, bamboo has a growth speed 10 times faster than common trees, it’s also as hard as other trees and has special ductility. In the broken bamboo pole, there are some tough filaments, those are bamboo fibers which connect all the bamboo poles like iron in the buildings. Meanwhile, the lignification cells in bamboo, like the concrete that covers the iron, together with the bamboo fibers, compose a hard and withy bamboo. More weight, more elasticity.
Because of such property, bamboo is the best material for building a disaster-resistant construction, helping the community with weather changes and reduce energy-wasting. The usage of bamboo in construction could date back to ancient times, and from Qin Dynasty, bamboo becomes the main material in building in southern China.
Apart from the solidness of bamboo, it’s also very pliable. Skilled craftsmen make advantage of this feature weaving various daily articles and arts, for example, the bamboo painting” the Emperors”.
Bamboos bow and stand as the wind flowing, displaying a harmonious combination of hardness and pliability, a special natural vitality.
A “green” secluded channel of life
Bamboo is a treasure throughout its life. When it’ alive, they can grow bamboo shoots. When they are cut down, they can replace wood, being made into furniture and buildings. Even when it becomes ash, it’s bamboo-carbon and can be used to make products which are very good for human health.
Perhaps since thunder fired bamboos and natural bamboo-carbon was produced, our ancestors were longing for using carbon to create a healthy and environment-protecting life. It’s said that many recluses of Taoism achieve success by the help of bamboo-carbon. They drink the springs under the carbon formed naturally or man-made, eat the grains and vegetables growing beneath the carbon and live on the carbon. In this way, they become immortal and strong.
The seven sages of the bamboo grove in Wei and Jin Dynasty always meet in the nature. They are good at the philosophy of keeping healthy. They play in the nature, appreciate literature and have food with bamboo-carbon, developing a green channel for health.
With red sands, green bamboos, warm sunshine and the mild breeze, Zhuhai is just like the place where the seven sages once lived. It is becoming the spirit home people pursue. When people who take an interest in history come across Zhuhai, an imaginative story starts in the mind.
Not only ancient people can be recluses and not only literati can sing poems and paint. To be at leisure is the green channel of rest, to be in the nature is the green channel away from noisy in the city, and to talk with ancient masters in the mind is the green channel for spirit. Come and be a recluse like the seven sages, finding the most comfortable habit for yourself and experiencing a green channel for life.
For man of today, what an elegant object bamboo is. In deep Zhuhai, playing some bamboo instruments and singing, tasting bamboo tea, eating bamboo shoots, they can experience an indifferent mood in this busy age. But for Zhuhai, gathering a special vitality in southern Sichuan, sweeping the worries in the secular society, displaying a flexible posture using hard body are all its responsibility. The bamboo leaves exchange fresh air, bamboo branches support the singing frogs, and bamboo poles produce a waving Chinese green. A gust of the wind and a spring, all are devoted to the natural health land given by heaven.
